Ponder Who?

Ponder grew up in Baltimore, a cultural city with an artistic community. Her family enjoyed block parties, hard shell crab feasts, art festivals and concerts.

She attended summer classes at the Maryland Institute of Art, only a few blocks away. and later created brochures and posters in high school. Art school seemed a natural choice when it came time for college. Looking for a venture away from home she decided upon the Philadelphia College of Art, now part of the University of the Arts.

At college Ponder majored in illustration and enjoyed learning a variety of other artistic medium. Animal drawing and film history are some of the lessons that continue to influence her work today.

Award winner in the Society of Illustrator’s Student Scholarship Competition
Ponder’s first freelance illustration job came when she was a student. She continued to work after graduation for clients in Philadelphia and New York for about ten years. Many of these illustrations could be seen in advertisements, pamphlets, and magazines, in addition to record album covers, and book jackets.

A first children’s book, Hear The Wind Blow, required only ten black and white illustrations inside and one full color jacket. It seemed a small job but was a stepping stone to more colorful things.

Ponder’s first picture book and her first child came at about the same time. Reading to her daughter was only one of the many experiences that convinced her to create more art for children.

Ponder now creates illustrations almost exclusively for children’s publications. She is a frequent visitor to schools, libraries and book stores where she loves to talk and show how she creates children’s illustrations.

She resides with her husband and two cats in Bucks county Pennsylvania.

She’ll autograph your book too!
